The Adachi Contemporary Ukiyoe Award 2011

The Adachi Foundation was established in 1994 to preserve the techniques of Japanese woodcut printing and pass on such distinctly techniques for the future generations. The Adachi Contemporary Ukiyoe Award is the project of The Adachi Foundation to explore Ukiyoe artists in 21st Century who work for Japanese traditional woodcut printing to introduce its very unique techniques and new possibility to the world. We are looking forward to seeing gContemporary Ukiyoe artisth and working for gUkiyoe Nowh together.

Theme of Ukiyoe Award 2011 [LINK]
Japan has been moving forward to recover from the huge earthquake which attacked part of Japan on this March 11. The key word of recovery is gLinkh. What is the gLinkh that we want in this so-called net work society? The theme of Ukiyoe award 2011 is gLinkh. We are looking forward to seeing the contemporary Ukiyoe which can give people the energy for future.


1st Prize
200,000 yen + your picture will be made as a woodcut print by the contemporary artisans and complete print will be given to you
2nd Prize
100,000 yen + your picture will be made as a woodcut print by the contemporary artisans and complete print will be given to you



What is "Contemporary Ukiyoe" ?

Ukiyoe was enjoyed by people in Edo era (1603-1867) as one of the way of mass communications. Ukiyoe artists drew all kinds of genre which could be attractive to people those days.

We expect your "Contemporary Ukiyoe"needs to be (have):
1. Generally widely appealing to everybody like Ukiyoe was
2. Newly unique and original like Ukiyoe was
3. "Beauty of Omission"which never can be expressed by photos or hand painting in order to show the beauty of woodcut printing
4. clear beautiful color which can be created by the combination of Washi paper and water based ink in order to show the beauty of woodcut printing
5. showing "NOW"!!
