Masterpieces of Flowers and Birds

From 1833 to 1834, at the peak of his fame as a designer of commercially published landscape prints such as a series of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Hokusai designed an untitled set of ten oban prints known as the “Large Flowers.” Works in this series, which depict dramatic close-up views of flowers, insects, and animals, attracted the interest and admiration of European artists in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The animated forms of the blossoms seem full of life-energy and even spiritual power. Hokusai often designed similar compositions for his paintings of human figures and supernatural beings.
This series was published by publisher, Nishimura Eijudo and Hokusai worked with this publisher very well.
