Goldfish

Goldfish is a series of woodcut prints by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) of the Edo period (1600-1868). It depicts goldfish, turtles, frogs, and other water creatures, all humorously endowed with human characteristics.

The laughing, running, singing and dancing goldfish are irresistibly cute in any age or culture, but in the latter half of the Edo period goldfish had become particularly popular as pets among the common people.
