Cats

Cats were often portrayed in ukiyo-e. Kuniyoshi who was popular for warriors prints was well known as an avid cat lover and he portrayed many cats in his caricature-like prints. Cats were common pets in the Edo period and many of them were kept in the apartment’s common area as community pets. The combination of beauty and cat was a popular motif of ukiyo-e.
