Mammals

Mammals were most portrayed in ukiyo-e. Not only favorite cats and dogs, but also large animals such as horses, goats, tiger, ox and more were depicted with flowers. Hiroshige and Hokusai depicted scenes with horses in their popular series. Interestingly the whale was not uncommon. Kuniyoshi’s dramatic tryptic “Miyamoto Musashi Subduing the Whale” is well known as a masterpiece.
