■  "Ono Waterfall on the Kisokaido" from the series of "Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces" by Katsushika Hokusai

Hokusai depicted 8 works series, "Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces" right after his bestseller series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" from the same publisher as Mt. Fuji series. He reached the culmination of the water expression in his world-famous masterpiece of "Great Wave off Kanagawa"; however, he pursued further water expressions in this series. He puts a lot of effort into describing various shapes of water. In the work of "Ono Waterfall on the Kisokaido", he expresses the water falling straight down, the water splashes from hitting the basin by falling water, the wavy water in the basin and the powerful water flow from the basin. It is a culmination of Hokusai' water expression!
