Eishosai Choki

Beauty and Attendant in Snow

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

The women in this print is thought to be Shushiki, a poetess of Edo (Tokyo). While still a small girl she composed a poem about cherry blossoms and fastened it to a brach of a cherry tree in Ueno. The abbot of the temple of Ueno enjoyed the poem and provided her with a litter to travel home. Ont the way home the dutiful daughter let her father take the ride. The design was inspired by this story.
