Woman Getting out of a Mosquito Net

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This print is a masterpiece exhibiting the peak of the craft of the woodcut carver in the 19th century. The print appears to show a scene early in the morning, with a woman rising from her bed and just emerging from the mosquito net. A bird gives a short cry as it flies away.
