Keisai Eisen

The Courtesan Asazuma of Ogiya

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This print is called Aizuri-e which means printed only in shades of blue. Eisen added a hint of red which creates even more sophisticated tastes to this work. He depicted the top courtesan, Asazuma of the Ogiya house in Yoshiwara. Eisen’s style of beauties gave an influence to impressionist artists such as Van Goh. Van Gogh actually copied Eisen’s work of beauty in his oil painting.
