Chobunsai Eishi Selected Geisha of the Gay Quarter

The Geisha Itsutomi

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

The shapely, tall, slim figure, standing with a shamisen plectrum in hand, is the characteristic type of bijin (beautiful woman) depicted by Eishi. The simple, clear representation in a limited palette without anything in the background, seems to reflect the spirit of a geisha who "sells her arts but not her body".
