Chokosai Eisho

The Courtesan Hanaogi of Ogiya

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This design of Hanaogi of Ogiya brothel is considered the best of the series "Comparisons of Beauties in the Gay Quarters". The courtesan's sensitively shaped pale oval face and the decorative hairpins are strikingly contrasted against a dark mica background. The delicately drawn feautures, coquettish hand gesture, and high neck surrounded by layered collars enhance the woman's elegant sensuality.
