The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
A courtesan has stepped out of a room merriment to soberup. She is standing alone on the veranda, with the shadows of the women in the room cast against the paper sliding doors behind her. The women are serving sake or playing the shamisen. The girl is clad in a snow-white dress, beneath which a seductive purple lining and her red underwear can be glimpsed.
