Shinagawa -Daybreak
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This shows part of a daimyo's procession on the road in front of the Shinagawa inns. There arｅ boats in the bay--four with sails set, one under the bank, and a group of boats at anchor at the left. In a later edition, four figures were added to the procession in the foreground, and the details of the anchored boats varied. Shinagawa today is a busy traffic center in the southern part of Tokyo.
