Kanagawa -Scenery at the Height
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The road rises steeply at the right, with a procession of travelers, two of whom are accosted by women trying to drag them into the tea-houses. In the bay, a large sailing boat at anchor, towards which a small boat with two men is being rowed. Other small boats and sailing boats in the distance at the left. Above, a jagged patch of blue in the white sky. Kanagawa today is the port of Yokohama, and hardly anything remains tｏ remind us of this landscape view by Hiroshige.
