The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
From Edo (Tokyo) to Totsuka was about one day's journey for the traveler in Hiroshige's time. Outside a tea-house on the outskirts of Totsuka, a man is shown dismounting from his horse. A maid-servant attends him, left; a ｗｏｍan and a porter, right. An elderly man comes over the bridge from the village beyond. Near the bridge is a milestone with the legend, For Kamakura turn to the left. The darkening sky in the background and the horizontal streaks on the road in the foreground indicate the approach of nighｔ.
