Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Oiso -Tora-ga-ame
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Travelers, one leading a horse, entering the village of Oiso. At the left, a pine-fringed bank falls away to the sea. Rain falls dark against the yellow sky. "Tora-ga-ame" may mean either "Tiger Rain" or "Tears of Tora." The latter would be an allusion to Tora-gozen, a heroine of the famous Soga Story; she lived in Oiso and is said to have been turned into stone by grief. This design is generally considered among the dozen or so finest in the entire series.
