Hara -Morning Fuji
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Mt. Fuji, flushed with pink from the morning sunrise, rises above the foot-hills. The peak surmounts the frame of the design. Two women-travelers and a porter on the road in the foreground. The porter's outer jacket is decorated with the HIRO crest of Hiroshige. Two cranes stand in the marsh in the middle-ground. In the old times the full
name of Hara was Ukishima-ga-hara, which meant "Floating Plain." It was said that the ground was so marshy that farmers had to row to their fields in small boats.
