Shimada -Oi River
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
A great number of travelers crossing the first arm of the Oi River. Some are making the passage at the left. The retainers of a daimyo (feudal lord) are waiting their turn on the shore of the near bank. The beautiful shades of blue, yellow, and grey--and the intricate shadings and overprintings of these colors-form an important part of the composition and convey a sense of the great expanse of the riverbed.
