Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Kakegawa -Distant View of Mt.Akiba
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Mt. Akiba rises to the right beyond rice-fields and mist. In the foreground a trestle-bridge on which two interestingly contrasted groups are about tｏ pass: in the center, a decrepit elderly couple followed by a gaily dancing child; at the left, a sturdy traveling monk, followed by a weary attendant. A kite is being flown from the left. This kite surmounts the frame of the design. Another kite has broken loose and goes sailing away in the wind.
