Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido
Yoshida -Toyokawa Bridge
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Toyokawa Castle is shown at the right, with scaffolding and laborers repairing the roof and walls. At the left, the long trestle-bridge crosses the river. Mountain peaks beyond. The idea of showing the laborers working on the ｃastle may have been suggested to Hiroshige by Hokusai's design in the Thirty-six Views of Mt.Fuji which shows workmen repairing the roof of the Asakusa Temple. The name of Yoshida was later changed to Toyohashi, and today it is one of the largest silk manufacturing centers in Japan.
