Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido

Okazaki -Yahagi Bridge

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

The Yahagi Bridge was the longest bridge on the Tokaido. A daimyo's procession is shown here crossing the bridge. In the distance is the town, Okazaki Castle (at the extreme right), and blue and black mountains in the background. The town of Okazaki was one of the most famous pleasure-centers on the Tokaido. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, was born in Okazaki and once resided in the castle there.
