Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido

Yokkaichi -The Mie River

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

A high wind blows across the marsh. A traveler crosses a foot-bridge, right, his yellow cloak swept by the wind. In the middle, a solitary windswept willow, near which a man runs along a causeway chasing his hat which has blown off. Yokkaichi was completely destroyed during the second world war, but it has been rebuilt and is one of Japan's major ports today.
