Snow Scene at Nihonbashi Bridge
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
A snow scene of Edo, the seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate government (1603-1867), as seen from the fish market on the northern edge of Nihonbasi Bridge. The sun is rising in the east over the snow-blanketed Edo. Boats loaded with fish and clams are seen going up the river toward the fish market. The snow-capped Mt. Fuji stands in the distance behind the Edo Castle.
Nihonbashi Bridge was the hub of Japan as well as Edo. Mileages to various parts of the country from Edo were measured from the center of the bridge as the starting point.
