Utagawa Hiroshige One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo
The Pine on the Tone River Bank
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
A vivid expression of the pine tree and the water-front. The engraver’s skill is shown in his cutting of a fisherman casting a net into the river. A distant view peeps through the meshes of the net. Hiroshige drew a similar scene in his “Edo Souvenirs”, but the place where the pine tree stood cannot be identified.
The river in this print is not really the Tone, one of the biggest rivers in Japan, but tributary of it now called the Edo River.
