The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Hiroshige, sometimes called an artist or snow, produced another masterpiece in this print. A noted Japanese painter highly praised the print as true to his name and said Hiroshige showed the flowing touch of his magical brush never seen in his earlier works.
When the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu entered Edo late in the sixteenth century, it hardly deserved the name of a city. It was sparsely populated and even his castle looked anything but a castle. As his residential castle was expanded, Edo gradually changed its face.
Lumber demand increased to build houses and the government gave a tract of land on Edo Bay to lumber merchants for their exclusive use. Later they dug a canal in Fukagawa to keep their timber there. “Kiba” stands for “Timber-yard” in English.
Dark blue and cloud shadings are omitted in most later prints.
