Utagawa Hiroshige

Rabbits and Reeds in Moonlight

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This charming design is an outstanding example of the chu-tanzaku (vertical rectangular prints) that Hiroshige was fond of. Deep and light shades of black ink are skillfully used and the red for the rabbit's eyes, and the publisher and censor's marks, creates an impressive color effect. The waka (31-syallable poem) reads, "The night is amorous. Dew covers the bed of grass. Probably the rabbit's wife cannnot sleep until late".
