The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
The large moon occupies the right-hand half of this perfect composition, illuminating the sky with its brightness. The three wild-geese flying gracefully from left to right provide an impressive sight and the cloud drawn beneath them, executed in skilled bokashi (gradation), adds to the effect of perspective. The rich entirety of this print is typical of the idyllic sense of Hiroshige.
