Tsukuda Island in Musashino Province
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This print is one of Hokusai’s most successful series, “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” and called Aizuri-e which means printed only in shades of blue. Hokusai added hints of colors to this Aizuri-e. Tsuskuda Island is the man-made island located in Tokyo bay. Hokusai purposely drew the horizon with a curved line which creates the open and broad atmosphere in this print as if he knew the shape of the globe.
