Katsushika Hokusai

Bullfinch and Dropping Cherry

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Cherry blossoms were common motifs of ukiyo-e. Hokusai depicted weeping cherry blossoms and a bullfinch on the bright blue background for this beautiful small print. Many Art Nouveau artists such as Galle or Daum were influenced by Hokusai's ukiyo-e in the genre of birds and flowers. Hokusai left many masterpieces of birds and flowers designed in a small Chuban format.
