Utagawa Kuniyoshi Goldfish

Tamaya, Tamaya (Bubble Vendor)

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

The soap-bubble vendors that emerged in the mid-Edo period (the eighteenth century) were known as Tamaya. In summer, they walked through town shouting “Tamaya, Tamaya” (bubble-vendor), blowing bubbles for the children to enjoy. In this print, goldfish, turtles, and tadpoles have all gathered to see the bubbles. Kuniyoshi had the clever idea of likening the bubbles that fish blow in the water to soap bubbles.
