The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Drinking party antics are an occasion for laughter in every day and age. Here, one goldfish is playing the shamisen, while two more are dancing to the music, their fluttering fins humorously evoking the kimono sleeves of a dancer. The attitude of the tadpole is equally comical. The seated goldfish with a large belly has the air of a guest of honor: slumping into his sake cup, he would have recalled a familiar sight for almost any viewer.
