Utagawa Kuniyoshi Goldfish

Sosanoo no Mikoto

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This print depicts the Japanese divinity Susanoo (also “Sosanoo”) no mikoto, who appears in Japanese myths. This is the scene of Susanoo subduing the massive Eight-Forked Serpent (Yamata no Orochi) of Izumo. The maiden Kushinada Hime lays at his feet as he fights. Kuniyoshi was a master of warrior prints, yet this usually fierce battle scene has a certain relaxed air when transposed to the world of the goldfish and eel.
