Utagawa Kuniyoshi Goldfish

Bonbon

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

During the Obon holidays, on the street corners of Edo one could see groups of girls who held hands and strolled down the street in parallel rows, singing as they went. The writer Shikitei Samba (1776-1822) describes such a scene in his comic fiction Ukiyoburo (Floating-World Bathhouse). The children’s song called Bonbon or Bon-uta appears to have had various regional manifestations, but during the Edo period it was a familiar sign of summer.
