Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Sakata Kaidomaru

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Kaidomaru was a common Edo-period name for Kintaro, the boy who later became Sakata Kintoki. There are a number of ukiyo-e depictions of Kaidomaru from Kuniyoshi's time and previously; this work is celebrated as particularly strong, energetic depiction of the boy.
