Toshusai Sharaku

The Actor Ichikawa Komazo II as Shiga Daishichi

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Sharaku's drawing of actors has extraordinary power. This print depicts Komazo in the role of the villain in the play Kataki-uchi Noriai-banashi. His facial expression is one of masculine vigor and malevolence. Note how the actor's prominent nose just out beyond the left line of the face. The mouth is drawn with a single black stroke and the corssed eyes are embellished by circular bands of red make up.
