Kitagawa Utamaro

Three Favorite Beauties

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

These three girls were considered to be the leading beauties in Edo during the Kansei era (1790s). The girl at center-rear is Tomimoto Toyohina, a geisha of the Tomimoto school; the girl on the right is Okita of Naniwaya, the daughter of a tea shop proprietor; and the girl on the left is Ohisa of Takashimaya, the daughter of the owner of a rice cracker shop.
