Kitagawa Utamaro Five Types of Contemporary Women in the Yoshiwara

Geisha

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

When one looks at the neck in this print it seems to convey an impression of voluptuous weight, accentuated by the curiously propped-up left hand. The girl's elaborate coiffure is decorated with silver and amber ornaments and a pale purple ribbon, and she is wearing several layers of Kimono. Her air of self-confidence seems to express contempt for the gay quarter.
