Kitagawa Utamaro Twelve Forms of Female Handiworks

Hair Dressing

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Reproduced here is one of the finest designs from the series "Twelve Kinds of Women's Handiwork". The women having her hair dressed is seated in a relaxed posture. The vivid portrayal of her and the hairdresser's expressions is typical of Utamaro's work. The hand of the coiffeuse, which is manipulating a comb, has a kind of sexiness of its own.
