"New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Nettle Tree in Oji" depicts the mysterious night scene of the year end and it is based on the myth about Fox's year end worship. The myth tells that on new year's eve, foxes in Kanto region are gathering around the sacred nettle tree and dress formally to visit the Oji Inari shrine. The fox is enshrined as a god's messenger in Shinto and the fox statues are commonly seen at the entrance of Inari shrines in Japan. Also in Japan, it is believed that a fox can be a yokai such as a nine tailed fox. Hiroshige well depicts this mysterious atmosphere of fox in this print.
