Chokosai eisho

The Courtesan Shiratsuyu of Wakanaya

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Eisho Chokosai was a pupil of Eishi Chobunsai who was well known for his Ukiyo-e of bust up beauties. This elegant beauty who holds "Kingyodama" (carrying glass fishbowl) was one of the most popular courtesans at that time. They were the head of the trend and the fashion leaders for all women. The glass fishbowl and the Persian rabbit pattern on its back ground were very popular in Edo at that time. This Ukiyo-e shows the roll of Ukiyo-e as a media such as magazines or news papers not only as the art. Eisho successfully took the trends in and integrated them with a beauty in this Ukiyo-e.
