Suzuki Harunobu

Girl Breaking Plum Branch

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

A founder of multi-colored woodcut printing, Harunobu Suzuki depicted girls who attempted to break a branch of the white plum blossoms. The girl on top lets her maid piggyback to reach out the branch. Over the plain pattern of the gray wall, their beautiful Kimono's sleeves are standing out. It is a beautiful scene from one spring day.
