The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
This print is a faithful depiction of the charm and beauty of a small Japanese village. The temple village, in the gathering dusk, stands among trees at the foot of a hill. Beyond rise the rounded summits of another range. Two farmers are working in the fields at the right, and two others are making their way to the village along the path in the center foreground.
