Utagawa Hiroshige Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido

Sakanoshita -The Peak of the Painter's Despair

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

At the right, a tea-house at the edge of a precipice. Two visitors in front of the tea-house gaze across the misty gulf at the rugged mountain peak opposite. This is Mt.Fudesute. Fude means "brush"; sute means "throw away." According to tradition, the famous painter Kano Motonobu (1476-1559) tried to paint the mountain, but failed to do it justice, and so he threw away his brush in despair.
