Minakuchi -The Noted Kampyo
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
At the left, women are preparing kampyo--gourd sliced into long strips--and hanging it to dry. Beyond is the village, with kampyo hanging to dry on the fences at the left. Kampyo was a famous local product of Minakuchi. The intense heat of a late summer day is suggested by the fact that the man walking along the road has taken off most of his outer clothing.
