Utagawa Hiroshige Masterpieces of Flowers and Birds in Otanzaku Format

Loquat and Bird

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Hiroshige attempted to create the expression of an intaglio printing in this pretty work with woodcut printing technique which is relief printing. It looks like the indigo dyeing kimono fabric. White areas are a washi paper color itself. The stamps in orange add a great accent and also remind the color of the loquat which was a popular fruit in the Edo era.
