Hiroshige depicted a horned owl napping on the branch of a pine tree. He skillfully arranged an owl, a pine branch and a crescent moon in the narrow and longer Tanzaku format. A peaceful face of an owl and a large crescent moon hidden behind the branch create a fantastical atmosphere as if it is a scene from a picture book. Printing with a combination of neutral colors and very delicate subtle Bokashi gradations complete Hiroshige’s mystical world.
