Katsushika Hokusai

Flock of Chickens

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Hokusai has grouped seven fowl together within this unusual round-fan shaped design. It is a daring yet successful experiment combining difficult poses in a difficult frame. The poses and color schemes of the birds are realistically depicted, with colors contrasting flawlessly and emerging prominently against the blue background. Note the two kiwame-in (censorship marks) which were used for round-fan prints between 1822 and 1843.
