Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Sweetfish under Bush Clover

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

This is a kacho-ga (pictures of birds and flowers) that delicately portrays pretty bush clover blossoms swaying in the wind and sweetfish swimming in the river below. In contrast to the realistic representations of the flowers and the fish, the ripples on the water are drawn in a simple and elegant manner, creating a harmony and balance that is remarkably sophisticated. Although the piece has a peaceful atmosphere typical of kacho-ga, it is also a fine work that demonstrates Kuniyoshi’s highly developed sense of design.
