The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
Fish in the water dodging raindrops: here is another strange thought! But these aren’t simply raindrops: playing on the pun between “sudden rain” (niwaka ame) and amenbo (“water strider”; a long-legged water insect) the print makes the long legs of the amenbo look like rain (ame). The depiction of the fish rushing about at the start of the sudden shower is a bit surreal.
