The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
In this exceptionally interesting composition the head of the girl, with remarkably white face, dominates the upper portion of the design. This is perfectly counterbalanced in the lower portion by the large triangular shape of the fan and the kimono decorated with black cherry blossoms. Despite its apparent complexity this work conveys a light, fresh feeling.
